Alfred Hermida from the University of British Columbia (Canada) presented his paper “The BBC Goes Blogging: Is ‘Auntie’ Finally Listening?”.

Hermida discussed the development of blogs by the BBC and their implementation.

“The blogs allow us a different tone of voice,” Hermida said. “It’s a bit more informal, a bit more casual. Reporters find it really liberating because it allows them to expand on what they’re writing about apart from their TV scripts.”

Hermida said the BBC blogs allowed for a more personal form of journalism in regards to the audience as well as a new openness for journalists.

“Blogging didn’t develop because an editorial staff let’s do this, this is the way to go,” Hermida said. “It happened because there were these elements there and no resistance.”

Congratulations…..blogs will give journlists an opportunity to be themselves. No strict scenario obligation. A more relaxed way of being yourself without comitting a crime.
