The newsroom for Colombia’s El Tiempo used to look like a “government office,” but with new techniques has transformed into something much more.
Guillermo Franco, the editor of ElTiempo.com, spoke about the company’s new approach, which divides the newsroom into “thematic teams” covering specific areas like city, sports, business and economy, entertainment, politics and justice. At the other end are the “products” (i.e. El Tiempo, ElTiempo.com, Hoy, CityTv) which request content from the thematic teams and put them into the products.
“The realistic goal is to have people with more than one skill, not just as a backpack journalist,” Franco said. “We are more than a newspaper manufacturer, we are content providers.”
